One of a kind – The Old Mine
The old mine and its history are impressive. The size of the area, the magnificent architecture, the mining tunnels, the incredible views and the guide’s stories are guaranteed to be memorable. Life in the mining town has been colorful and the mined minerals have enriched the whole of Finland.
The mine’s history begins in 1908, when a large yellow stone was found while dredging the Kivisalmi shipping channel. Tracing the stone’s origin was given to mining engineer Otto Trüstedt, who led the searchers to the strange mound. Green flashes had been seen on the top of the mound, which soon turned out to be reflections of minerals, i.e. exceptionally rich copper ore. The name of the mining company and later the town became Outokumpu.
Mining ended in 1989 when the ore ran out, but metal industry companies are still flourishing in Outokumpu. In addition to the old mine, the Keretti tower, which was the tallest mining tower in Europe at the time, reminds of history. Now, Keretti Golf and its green course operates at the foot of the tower.
At the heart of the old mine beats the prestigious and lively Mining Museum, where you can get to know the history of Outokumpu and Finnish mining. The museum has changing exhibitions throughout the year, so there is always something new to explore. Under the care of a tour guide, history comes alive in a new way.
Beside the historic site can be found Children’s Mine, which is also the largest playground in Eastern Finland. There are play stands, a bicycle track, mini houses, work machines and stories about the history of Outokumpu through the eyes of children. The popular frisbee golf course in the mining area is especially popular among the youth.
After the activities, you can admire the scenery at the top of the mine’s hill, take it easy at the ice cream kiosk or have a tasty meal at the Takomo restaurant.
